The Ascension of the Lord: You are Witnesses of These Things

May 21, 2023 by Deacon Frederick Bartels Leave a Comment

Ascension of the Lord

Today we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord, that moment when our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven to be seated at the right hand of the Father, where he intercedes for us as the Sovereign Lord of the cosmos, as the one mediator between God and men (1 Tim 2:5).

The Catholic Proposal: Jesus Christ is Lord

April 28, 2023 by Deacon Frederick Bartels Leave a Comment

Ascension of the Lord

The Catholic proposal articulates God’s plan for man to share in his own blessed life. This plan is made possible by Jesus Christ and entrance into the Church through the sacrament of Baptism. Through repentance, faith in Christ, and Baptism, men become the adopted children of God, and thus heirs to the kingdom of God.

Lazarus and the Rich Man, Heaven and Hell

March 9, 2023 by Deacon Frederick Bartels Leave a Comment

Gate to hell

The parable of Lazarus and the Rich Man reminds us that hell is a real danger. If we reject helping those in need, we might find ourselves permanently residing in the netherworld, pleading for a drop of water to cool our tongue.

January 27, 2023 by Deacon Frederick Bartels Leave a Comment

Jesus' Sermon on the Mount

The Beatitudes are like a self-portrait of Christ. They look beyond the struggles of this life to eternal life to come. They proclaim that the blessings of the New Covenant will be fully realized in heaven.

Pope St. John Paul II:

Jesus Christ meets the man of every age, including our own, with the same words: “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” These words contain both a fundamental requirement and a warning: the requirement of an honest relationship with regard to truth as a condition for authentic freedom, and the warning to avoid every kind of illusory freedom, every superficial unilateral freedom, every freedom that fails to enter into the whole truth about man and the world.  (Redemptor Hominis No. 12)
