Sin

The Elixir of Egoism And Its Antidote

October 19, 2018 by Deacon Frederick Bartels Leave a Comment

Broken Glass

Clearly, something is seriously and dangerously wrong in our nation. Things are topsy-turvy. “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter” (Isaiah 5:20).

The Root of Our Problem Is found In Expecting To Receive More Than We Are Willing To Give

October 13, 2018 by Joy Joseph Leave a Comment

Yet this desire is at the foundation of our ways of being. It is the simplest meaning of the word “Profit,” which is simply getting more than what we gave.

Sin: The Sly Destroyer of Souls

September 30, 2018 by Deacon Frederick Bartels Leave a Comment

Hell and fire

The readings of today’s liturgy emphasize one simple truth of our Catholic faith: sin damages us and others. It has serious long-term consequences—even those of an unending, eternal duration. Sin can lead to that terrifying reality we call hell.

Stumbling Blocks and The Danger of Scandal

May 24, 2018 by Deacon Frederick Bartels Leave a Comment

Millstones

It’s a convenient, easy, worldly and “New-Agie” thing to do—making God “easy to get along with” or viewing him in a “nice” unchallenging way. Pope St. John Paul II:

Jesus Christ meets the man of every age, including our own, with the same words: “You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” These words contain both a fundamental requirement and a warning: the requirement of an honest relationship with regard to truth as a condition for authentic freedom, and the warning to avoid every kind of illusory freedom, every superficial unilateral freedom, every freedom that fails to enter into the whole truth about man and the world.  (Redemptor Hominis No. 12)
